Grey crowned cranes are usually found in grasslands close to bodies of water. They prefer to nest near bodies of water that provide cover, however they often feed in open savannas and grasslands.
Everyone who has visited a zoo will instantly recognise this elegant bird by the fully extended golden crown. But it’s not always obvious how the rest of the feathers on the bird’s body react to this flamboyance with their own explosive display.
