The meerkat or suricate is a small carnivore belonging to the mongoose family and lives in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia, in south western Angola and in South Africa . A group of meerkats is called a mob which normally contains about 20 related meerkats, but some super-families can have up to 50 or more members.
This drawing shows a typical pose for a meerkat – constantly on the look out for any signs of danger ready to raise the alarm alerting the mob to head for cover.
